Recent Photos

Our Thanksgiving picture.....

From the recent Chicago snowstorm. Isn't the snow beautiful??

Look at how beautiful the trees are...

Putting the star on our tree

"It's the prettiest tree we've ever had."

A quote that my family always says after putting up the Christmas tree.

Thanksgiving/Christmas & all the rest

Since it has been awhile since I last updated our blog, I feel like I have a lot to say. Kent and I spent Thanksgiving in Dallas, TX with Kent's family. It was fun to see people that we haven't seen in quite awhile. Plus, it was nice to be in the beautiful weather and enjoy being outside. We enjoyed the weekend relaxing watching football, sitting out on the swing by the pool, and playing the piano. It has been awhile since we have played a real piano, so we definately enjoyed hearing the sound of a good piano. We were also able to catch up with family and hear what has been going on in their lives. We were able to go out to dinner with all the cousins on Friday evening. On Saturday, we then got back on the plane and came back to Chicago.

The following weekend, we went and bought our Christmas tree. It's hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner. With our tree up and gifts bought, it seems more like Christmas-time. The malls are packed with shoppers, stressed as they try to find that toy that their child just has to have, and others who are just enjoying the holiday music around them. We have a busy month of December, but are looking forward to being with family at Christmas. Kent played the drums in the church Christmas performance this weekend, so he was busy this week with rehearsals and performances. This coming weekend, we start the Christmas celebrations with the Hunt Family Christmas and on Sunday, we're headed to the Illini Basketball game with my parents. Looking ahead, the next weekend is then Christmas. Wow! How the time flies. My good friend, Rachel, from high school will be coming home for a few weeks from Japan at the end of December. I am looking forward to being able to see her. Before she flies back to Japan, she'll be staying with us for a night, so I'm sure we will be up late, talking and catching-up with one another.

We had our second ultrasound last Monday and learned that our due date will most likely be changing to April 9th. Everything looks good with the baby, and the measurements matched those of my previous ultrasound. I have my next doctor's appointment on the 18th, so we will find out for sure then, but everything points in the direction of changing my due date to the 9th. Hopefully that is more accurate, and I won't be 2 weeks later than the 9th of April. :) We were able to tell that the baby was definately bigger than our previous ultrasound, so it was fun to be able to see more within the images. No, we still didn't find out what gender the baby is!

We also went this past weekend to look at houses in the area. After talking with many friends from church and others in the area, we've decided that we want to look for something in Berwyn. We looked at about 6-7 different properties this past weekend and really like one in particular. We are praying for God's guidance in our decisions and are putting together an offer with a few contingencies. We will have to keep you updated on what is going on with the house. If it isn't supposed to be the house God wants us to be in, we don't want it, but we do really like it and it seems like a great deal!

I think that sums up the last few weeks of our lives. I'll post pictures as well so you can see our Christmas tree and other key events from the past few weeks.

If I don't post before Christmas....MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! Have a wonderful holiday season and enjoy spending time with those that mean the most to you.

Two due dates??

I had my appointment last night and found out that now I have two due dates. At least for now I do. March 30th is my original due date, and according to my ultrasound, April 9th is my due date. So, I am going for another ultrasound on December 4th to find out what that one says. Basically, the technician wasn't able to see everything that she needed to see, so suggested another ultrasound. In fact, I'm kind of excited because hopefully this time I can ask her to move the screen more so I can see the little "bean" moving around the screen. We'll keep you updated and hopefully have a better picture to post as well.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and we'll miss those of you who we won't be with this weekend.

Stay tuned for more info about baby Thompson........ :)

Our first baby picture...

We would post the picture, but unfortunately, it isn't digital, so we don't have a way to get it onto the computer. But, we had our first ultrasound today. It was fun to see our little bean move around on the screen. Everything looks good with the baby, so that was great news. The tech did the measurements, and then took a picture of the face for us to take home with us. She did say that the baby was measuring smaller than my due date says, which basically means that I am probably a week behind what we originally thought, but we will find out for sure at our next doctor's appointment on November 20th. For now, we are thinking that my due date may possibly change to the first week in April. The tech told us that we definately have an active little baby in there, which is normal for this time in the pregnancy, being that it has more room to move around. Everything is going well, and we're excited to meet this new little one in a few months.

We have a busy month of November ahead of us as we will be travelling for Thanksgiving. We were both gone this last weekend to different places. Kent spent the weekend in Ohio visiting his family. He had a great time with his family, and his neices and nephews. I spent the weekend in Indianapolis with my college friends. It was so good to see all of them. Next weekend, I have a music therapy conference in Kansas, so I'll be making the trip from Thursday-Sunday. Then on that Wednesday we leave to go to Dallas for Thanksgiving. So, while it will be a busy month, we are excited about what is to come.

Pictures from the Marathon

This is before the race, where we had to split-off from each other!

The start of the race....

This was right after the start, look at the mass of people running!

2 mile mark.

Again, 2 mile mark.

This was the 13 mile mark. People were more spread out, but still it was a mass of people. We still didn't see Kent at the point.

A Frustrating Finish....

Well, today was the day of the marathon, and unfortunately, Kent's injured leg/knee wouldn't allow him to finish. The day started out quite cold, but at least it wasn't raining or snowing. Kent, Stephen (Kent's brother), and I took the train downtown and headed toward the start line. It was insane the amount of people that we saw. There were not only so many runners, but so many people there to watch and support others. Stephen and I waited at the start line to watch the first few runners start the race. Yes, to them, it was a race for them! These people were crazy fast. They were running about 4.50-5 minutes miles! WOW!!! After watching the first five minutes from the start line, we walked to the two mile mark to hopefully see Kent there. We also met up with Erin Brighty at that point. We waited there for awhile, but it was so difficult to see with all of the people. After awhile, we took off and walked to the 13 mile mark, still not having seen Kent! We waited until 10:30am at the 13 mile mark for Kent. That was 2 and 1/2 hours after the beginning of the race, so we figured we must have just missed him. We were so cold, couldn't feel our hands, and our muscles were very stiff, so we walked down the block to the Starbucks to get a hot drink to warm ourselves up. After finally defrosting, we headed back toward the finish line in hopes to get a good spot to be able to see Kent finish at least. We made our way to the front of the fence for the finish line, when my phone started ringing. It was Kent saying it was at the reunite tent. He wasn't able to finish, as he had gotten an injurty about 6 weeks ago. His ITband flared up and made it impossible for him to run or walk. He started out the race, and at 1 1/2 miles, his leg/knee started to bother him. He kept running until about 8 miles, then he had to walk. He started walking from then on, but at 16 miles, he had to make a decision whether he was going to run back out on the race course, or walk back at that point. Since he was walking at a 5 hour or 5 1/2 hour pace, he decided that he wasn't going to make his goal of finishing in a certain time, or possibly not even finish within the alloted time. So, he pulled off the course. While he is definately disappointed, he's glad that at least he was able to finish the half marthon at a strong pace. Plus, he is at least able to walk right now. He's limping, or walking with a straight leg, but at least he's walking.

I think for now, he's decided that he is going to just run half marathons, just because of the injury rate from training for marathons. I'm just glad that he's safe, and he survived his first marathon experience.

I'll post some pictures of the race, so you can at least see the mob of people that there were. Kent said that the entire run from downtown to Wrigleyville, there were fans the entire way there and back.

A proud Aunt

My sister just had the first baby on my side of the family, and I have to say that the family is so excited. She is just precious and a miracle from God. Claire Isabelle arrived on Sept. 16th at 3:17pm. She weighed in at 8 pounds 1 ounce, and was 20 1/2 inches long. She is doing well, and now at home with Mom and Dad. Here are a few pictures for you guys to enjoy.

My first day in the world!

Going home in my precious little outfit.

Our Big News

I believe we have been able to tell all of you this by now, but in case we accidentally missed anyone, Kent and I are expecting!!! That's right, we're going to have a baby. Our due date is March 30, 2007. We are super excited about this new addition that will be coming into our home. We found out at the end of July, and just went to the doctor for the first time last Monday. Our doctor is great, and says that everything looks good. We are just praying that things continue to go smoothly. I am feeling great. I haven't had any nausea, tiredness, or other pregnancy symptoms. So far, God has definately blessed this pregnancy.

Other than the baby news, nothing else has really changed. Our jobs are still going well. I'm getting more and more respect from my co-workers which is great. I feel like the more they see what I do, and the more that my patients talk to them about how much they love music therapy, the more that they are going to see the validity of my position. There have been a lot of changes recently as far as new staff, managers leaving, etc, but for the most part I think they changes have been positive.

Kent's job is going well again. He is also still training for the marathon in October. If anyone is interested in coming with me to watch him run it, let me know. The date is October 22, and it starts at 8am. He is excited to run it, and starting to get into his longer training runs these next few weeks.

We're also waiting for the birth of my little neice to be born. Shannon will be going into labor any day now, and I am definately excited to meet this new little one. I'm sure she will be adorable, and break all of our hearts.

So, I think that's is all of the udpates. We don't have any recent pictures, but I'm sure when my neice is born we'll be taking a few. We love you all, and hope things are going well with you guys. Keep us updated.

Half Marathon results are in!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I finished my first half marathon today! The race started at 6:30 so we had to be up by 5. I was up by 4 and was too pumped up to sleep. There were some train delays that were kind of stressful, but I made it in time.

It was a beautiful morning...clear skies and no humidity and fairly cool. I've been doing my marathon training with walk breaks where I run 6 mins and walk 1 min. This is a great strategy for the full marathon, but this morning I felt great, and didn't want to walk because everyone around me was just running the whole time and I wanted to keep up. I was way under my 9 min/mile pace for the first few miles, and wanted to be cautious about going to fast. But I just kept running with everyone and just judging my pace by how I felt.

The last 6 miles of the race were along lake shore drive which has no shade. The sun was getting hotter and I was really feeling it by then, and around about mile 10 I took my first walk break at a gatorade stop. I took another around mile 12 so I could have a strong finish. While I didn't exactly have a strong finish, I did finish with a personally great time. My goal was to break 2 hours, and my official time was 1:53:05.

I also learned how the half and the full marathon are completely different races. The half marathon is just a much faster pace and can be run more like a fast race. But with the marathon you have to have more of a strategy so you can have an optimal time. My goal is to do the marathon in under 4 hours on Oct. 22. I will have to run it exactly like my training style with the run-walks.

You can check out the race results here if you want to. It shows some other stats as well as my time. Just type my number in at the bottom: 1446

http://www.onlineraceresultsb.com/race/view_race.php?race_id=3063

If you look at the results, it is funny to think that when I was nearing mile 8, the leaders were crossing the finish line! Regan said that the winner Brian Sell just trotted across the finish line as perky as can be...like he could have run the whole thing again! His time was 1:04:25 (4:55 per mile)

Here are some pictures:Me before the start of the race

Me full of energy almost to mile 5

Me crossing the finish line blurry-eyed and unaware of where Regan was taking the picture.

Just posing with my medal that says I finished.

It was a total blast and I hope to do it again next year!

Random pictures

Last weekend was my Sister's baby shower. This is the diaper cake that I made for her and the baby. We are so excited to meet this new little one.

I have the best friends from Taylor! A few weekends ago they all came to Chicago for a girls get together. I was great to see them.

Who knew that they actually have Ice Cream trucks that go around. I thought they were just on television shows, but they actually exist!

This is from my cousin's wedding when my Grandma from Arizona was visiting. It was good to be able to see her, even if it was just for a little while.

Such a busy Summer

We have been so busy over the last few months as summer is flying by. A few weeks ago for our anniversary we went to see "Wicked" on Broadway in Chicago. I have to say that if you haven't seen it yet, you have to go! It was definately the best show I have seen in a long time. After the first Act, Kent and I looked at each other, and said, "It is so good, we could leave now and be totally happy." In fact, we loved it so much, we went back again a week later. Actually, we went with friends from Fort Wayne who had extra tickets. It was good to see Kyle and Cassie again. While we didn't get to spend too much time talking during the performance, we at least got to see them before their baby comes in October.

In early July we made the trip to Ohio to see Kent's family. We actually got to see all of the siblings as well as neices and nephews, except Stephen who is still in Vietnam. It was great to see everybody. We mostly stayed at home, trying to stay cool, and each being with one another. It is amazing how fast kids can grow up so fast in only one year.

After going to Ohio, we spent the 4th of July in Chicago. It was kind of fun to be in the city for Independence day. We went downtown on the 3rd to see the city's fireworks. Unfortunately, we didn't realize they weren't being shot-off from Navy Pier, so we didn't get to really feel the experience. They still looked pretty though. On the 4th we stayed in Oak Park and went to the high school to watch the fireworks. They were wonderful, and it was much cooler, which made it a little more enjoyable.

A few of our friends have come to visit us as well this month. It is fun to have friends come visit, even if we have been busy. There are so many things to do around here, which is great. Kent and I have been to the beach once, but the water was a little too cold. I'm sure after the last few weeks, the water would be much warmer.

This past weekend, my friends from Taylor came to spend the weekend in Chicago. While it was one of the warmest weekends of the summer, it was still a lot of fun to just have the girls hang out and talk. We went downtown for dinner, met some of the guys for dinner, then we went to watch fireworks, while the guys went to see Superman at IMAX. I think Kent and I realize that we are lucky to have so many loving Christian friends around us to support and encourage us.

I'll update with pictures from the last few months soon.

The Last Few Weeks

Again, I apologize for the fact that we haven't updated our blog in a few weeks. Things are going well with us, and we're enjoying our jobs. Last week, we went to Wrigleyville for the Taylor Alumni get together game. It was fun to see the Cubs play. Yes, they lost, but it was still fun. I have always loved the history and nostalgia of Wrigley Field. It was fun to see some of our college friends as well. We thought we'd leave a few pictures on the blog for you to see.

Checking In

Well, it has been a little while since we checked in, so I thought I would just send a little update. Things are going where here in Chicago. Kent and I are both enjoying our jobs, and our apartment. We are getting to know a few more people from our church, which is making it more and more like home. We haven't gotten involved in the praise team or anything yet, but probably sometime this summer we will start getting involved. My job has been taking off more and more, which is encouraing. It is weird to think that in February, their first music therapist started, and now I have a full case load. The nurses are starting to see the benefits more and more, which is great. I'm hoping that within a year, they see the need to hire a second music therapist. I know it will take some time to grow the program, but I see that happening in the future.

We are both looking forward to the warmer weather to actually get to enjoy the benefits of Chicago. I still can't believe that we live close to a large body of water. There are days that I drive right by the lake, and marvel at it's beauty. God definately is the master artist.

So, although I don't have any new pictures right now, we are still doing great here in the big city. This weekend we're going to finish tiling my sister and brother-in-law's shower, so maybe we'll get some pictures this weekend. Check back next week to see if there is another update.

Grief and Thoughts about It....

So, over the last week, I feel like the only news we have received has been bad news. Whether it was our friend's baby being rushed to the emergency room, an accident of some of our friends, or the horrible car accident at Taylor. While both Kent and I have been away from Taylor now for awhile, I still can just imagine how difficult having 5 people from the University being stripped away from them suddently. I can't imagine however the waiting in the Chapel, and hearing that their friend was one who didn't make it. I've read so many stories and heard so many stories as well, and my heart is heavy as I think about the students and faculty having to go back to classes today. I've been praying for that professor with the empty chair, the roommate with an empty bed, or those still waiting to hear if their friend has come out of her coma yet. I know that the only way Christians can make it through a time like this is faith, and it makes me appreciate the community that Taylor is. I cannot imagine how one would get through a time like this if they didn't know Christ. So, even though it has been close to a week now, please continue to pray for the families of the victims, the Taylor community, and anyone else who has a direct connection to this tragedy. If you are reading this, obviously you are close to both of us, so we want to say that We love you, and are truly grateful for all of you.

Other than this last week, things have been going well with both of us. Jobs are the same. We did take Kendra (one of my college roommates) out this Saturday to her favorite restaurant and a movie. It was fun to hang out with her. You see, Kendra is great at celebrating her birthday. In fact, she makes a whole MONTH out of it. So, since her birthday is Thursday, we thought we would start just a few days early. All jokes aside, it has been great to have her here in Chicago, at least for a little bit longer.

So, as you go about your weeks, remember not to take life for granted. We never know when God will decide that it is time for us to move to our Eternal Home. So, instead of yelling at that loved one, give them a hug today and let them know how much you appreciate them. :)

Springtime is here!!!

I love spring, and what comes with it. The flowers outside of our apartment are blooming, the trees have leaves on them again, and when the windows are open we can hear the birds! So, I wanted to share some pictures of Springtime here in Chicago with you. Enjoy!!!
Aren't tulips just the best in Spring??

This is a few of our street. I can't wait to see all these trees in Fall!

More tulips

This is the outside of our apartment. The top windows are ours.

More tulips! I love them.

Remember to take time to smell the flowers. :)

Friends are the Best!!

So I've decided that I love our Taylor Friends!!! Kyle and Cassie came to visit us a few weekends ago, and it was a blast to have them here. Even when we were just sitting around talking, we were cracking up! Poor Cassie probably heard more Taylor stories than she wanted to hear. The four of us didn't really do a whole lot over the weekend, but we did end up going to Woodfield Mall and Ikea! Oh what an experience. Those two places are just huge. While we were at the mall, we ate lunch at Rainforest Cafe, which was a blast!! Not a great date place since you can't really hear each other, but the atmosphere is great. On Sunday we went to church together and then went out to eat once again. I have to say I had the most fun though just hanging out and laughing. I think my cheeks hurt after they left! I'll share just one picture from the weekend.

Chinatown

Not only were we able to see Kent's parents this last weekend, but we also were able to visit with Ginny and Frank on Sunday evening. They were visiting Chicago from out of town, and we met up with them as well as Kendra, Sara & Mario in Chinatown on Sunday evening. Kent and I haven't been there before, so it was fun to go and see what it was all about. There definately isnt' a shortage of food in Chinatown. We went out to eat with everyone, and discovered that all cultures have their unique food. Frank also wanted us to try Bubble Tea, which is some sort of tea that has big tapioca in it as well. It was good! We walked around a little, and then headed back home. Even though it was a short time, it was still good to see them. Here are just a few pictures of our time with them as well.

Chinatown with the Sears Tower in the background as well.

Kendra, me, Ginny, & Sara in Chinatown

So, this last weekend was really the first time that we actually did anything in Chicago, so it was fun to experience some of the city. We still enjoying our jobs and our apartment. We really feel like God was the one putting this puzzle together.

Museum Time!

Wow! We have been busy this last weekend. Kent's parents came to visit on Thursday night and stayed through Sunday after church. It was fun to have them around and take them to some different museums and stuff. Friday Kent took off of work and took them to the Museum of Science and Industry. There is a U-boat exibit right now, and it was a hit! Friday we went to Shedd Aquarium, which was fun as well. Here are some pictures of their visit.

I loved the penquins! They are so cute, and who knew they were so little.

We also watched the show at the Oceanarium at Shedd, which was also a blast to see the dolphins, especially when they were playing.

I just thought this was a neat picture of the name of the building.

A picture of the skyline from Museum Campus. It was nice to finally get to take some people to these places, since we hadn't been since moving.

It is SOLD!!!

So, it is official, or at least will be on Thursday afternoon at 4pm! We will no longer be home-owners. While we loved our house, we are extremely excited to finally be done with this procedure and not have double living expenses. This is the last piece of the puzzle, so we're glad that God has finally put the last piece into place. Thank you all so much for praying for us throughout this journey. We will continue to keep you updated, but for now, pray that everything goes smoothly on Thursday (3/30). We love you all!

St. Patty's Day in Chicago

We have always heard about how for St. Patrick's Day Chicago turns the river green, and we were both really excited about seeing this happen. Kent was prepared to take the camera with him to work this coming Friday, but instead when we went downtown on Saturday, the river was green. It was fun to see this tradition up close. We have both never seen so many people wearing green in one place before. Who knew that St. Patty's Day was such a big holiday, and it hasn't even happened yet. So, we're including some pictures of the river for you to enjoy as well.

It has been a transition to live in the city, but we are really enjoying it. We have found a church that we like, thanks to some "family" friends. It is a Non-Denomonational church, and seems to be similar to that of E-Free that we're used to. They are in a transition right now as their pastor left in October, but they still seem to be thriving and strong.

Kent went last night to a Men's Night Out at the Wheaton sports complex, which he said was unbelievable! He said that it had 4 tennis courts, 2 raquetball courts with plexiglass, 2 pools, steam room, etc. He had a lot of fun and was able to meet some other guys. I went to a women's mentoring meeting last week, and am excited about getting set up with a mentor. There are a lot of things for us to get involved with, but we're just trying to get a feel for the church before we really commit to any certain ministry.

Kent's job is going well. He is enjoying working downtown, but still trying to figure out the best way to get there. He has tried taking the bus to the train, driving to the train, and riding his bike to the train. He is looking forward to the weather getting warmer so that he can ride his bike more.

My job is also going well. I have finally started seeing my own patients and I am getting more into the swing of things. I really am enjoying the flexibility of my schedule and freedom as well. My biggest challenge so far is convincing my co-workers that music therapy transcends all races, ages, and classes. I think in the long-term they will understand that, but for now I am having to convince them that music therapy can benefit all patients. My co-workers are really nice, and interested in what I do, which helps!

We have been able to take one trip to Bloomington so far to catch up with our friends, and see how much their little babies have grown. We truly miss them, but realize that God has lead us here, and are excited to see what He has in store for us. :)
